So why set goals?

Goal setting is a super popular method and if you haven’t heard of it you might have just been living under a rock. Goals are pretty much just us saying “Hey this is something I am going to do”.

Some people may not be big fans of goals, maybe you’ve set them one time and then forgot about them till you realized you never even got close to reaching your goals…

When we don’t set very good goals and this sets us up for failure later on in our journey. Goal setting for working moms Is going to help you change that.

Goals can be a great way to decide what we want, maybe need to implement into our life and can be a way to wake up most days (we are realistic around here) with a spring in your step.

A lot of times in life we are just living someone else’s dream. Following the order set before us and goal setting is the perfect way to get genuine direction in your life and know what you want.

As a mother our life becomes quickly a circle of nappies, food/feeding, dishes, cleaning that mess, stopping our bubbas from falling off high things and trying to include something enjoyable or educational during the day…

Makes total sense why overwhelm is quick to take over us as mothers. Goal setting is going to give you direction not only within your parenting but in your personal life as well. A well-rounded mum is a happy mum, and therefore a calmer mum.

Motivation & inspiration

Goal setting also allows us to stay motivated and inspired and keeps us on track during the month, week, or year. Goal setting for working moms has a worksheet that helps us to really maintain motivation.

Goals or intentions… aren’t they the same thing? Well, I guess… they are but they aren’t… Let’s talk about it!

Goals

Goal setting for working moms Involves actually know what a goal is… Goals are specific things you want to achieve. Sometimes goals can create feelings of failure if you don’t achieve what you set out to do.

When setting goals having them measurable and realistic are super important parts of them. As well as having a clear step to allow you to reach your goals.

Intentions

Intentions are essentially goals without the pressure of achievement. Intentions are more relaxed than goals and for some people, this works well. Especially if they are people who are generally more tough on themselves.

Goals vs intentions

Goals and intentions are the same but they’re not. Goals are generally far more structured and if you work best with strict intentions and boundaries goal setting will be the perfect way for you to get clear on what you want.

Intention setting is far more mellow, it means you intend to do these things but it won’t be the end of the world if you don’t manage to achieve them.

Maybe some intentions you will meet and it will streamline the intention-creating process, and maybe some you don’t and realise you don’t even need.

Understanding your needs…

A big step in the right direction is understanding your needs. If you don’t understand what you need or want how are you going to set goals to even begin to achieve things that make you feel fulfilled?

Your needs or wants can be as simple as having more one-on-one time with your kids. Where you play the games they like and just focus on them.

What do you need… who are you and how does that change things for you?

So what do you need? This is the million dollar question. Knowing what you need and what you want is going to change the outcome of what you need when it comes to goal and intention setting. Then planning the steps to success.

Finding a reflection process and questions that allow you to figure out more about who you are. Knowing who you are and what you need is a lifelong process that will continue throughout your life.

All you need to work on knowing is the right now for these things.

Goal setting for moms/mums

There are a few things you need to know about goal setting when it comes to being a mum. You may not be able to set goals and totally focus on them, or have balance as easily as others without children.

Remember that your values may be different to those working in the corporate world. That is ok if your main goals are to nourish and educate your babies!

If you want to have a part-time job and do amazing at it and take care of your babies that is ok too.

Mums have different needs

Goal setting for working moms is about knowing that as mums, dependent on how many kids we have, and what we do for a job be that stay-at-home mothering or the corporate world.

You are never going to have the same situation as someone else. So knowing that what you will need to work out for your goals will be different to anyone else is important.

Our children come first and sometimes we have to factor that in

We all know as mothers our kids always come first. So sometimes our wants and needs get put on the back burner to keep our babies alive. Goal setting for working moms involves sacrifice.

As much as that is ok and reasonable, maybe for some of us who burn out regularly, our goal may be to see to our wants and needs quicker than we do now.

Wearing multiple hats

Wearing multiple hats during motherhood is inevitable. Sometimes breaking down the category’s of our lives into specific hats helps us focus on the more important hats each month.

Hats/categories:

  • Work/career
  • Home environment
  • Financial
  • Relationships/Connections

The list goes on and on, sometimes evaluating your ‘hat’ quality allows you to focus on your weaker categories and areas.

Smart goals

We want to make sure when we do all our pre-thinking, we get to set some really good quality goals that are as follows. When we follow this idea (in our own way, because what may be specific and measurable for others might not be for us).

S – Specific

Specific goals are easiest to explain with an example…

Not specific: Drink water

Specific: Drink 5x 200ml cups of water a day

Specific means we have a clear idea of what we are doing, it means we can actually plan steps and then take them to kick our goals in the bum!

M – Measurable

Again an example.

Not specific: Start walking

Specific: Complete a 5 minute + walk 3x weekly

The second one gives you measurable numbers. You can see you have achieved and know you’re making progress.

A- Achievable

If we reuse our last example… knowing that you will have enough time, to fit in at least 15 minutes of walks over 7 days, means that this goal is firstly possible in your life.

There is no point in setting physically impossible goals. When we are setting goals we want to make sure we are accomplishing them. This is only possible with achievable goals.

R – Relevant

Let’s keep this point pretty simple… No point setting a goal to fly a plane to America if you aren’t a pilot and are scared of flying.

T – Timely

Motivation is something that ebbs and flows throughout our lives. So setting all our goals to run for five years isn’t going to work out well for us when our motivation disappears 5 days in…

Mindset is everything

Without the mindset that you will action this… you won’t! Your mindset determines whether you’ll take consistent action towards your goals or let them fade away into forgotten dreams.

When you approach goal setting with a growth mindset, believing in your ability to learn and improve, you’re more likely to persist through challenges.

It’s about believing in yourself and understanding that small, consistent steps lead to significant changes over time.

WANT acronym

W – Wins

Looking at your wins and achievements helps you see how far you’ve come. Celebrating your wins, no matter how small they may seem, builds confidence and motivation.

This positive reinforcement helps create momentum for achieving future goals.

A – Aversions

Understanding what holds you back or what you avoid is crucial for effective goal setting. Aversions are the tasks, situations, or responsibilities that you tend to procrastinate on or actively avoid.

By identifying these aversions, you can develop strategies to overcome them and ensure they don’t become roadblocks to achieving your goals.

N – Needs

Identifying and understanding your needs is crucial for effective goal setting. As a working mom, your needs might include personal time for self-care, professional development opportunities, or quality time with your children.

Being honest about your needs helps you set realistic and meaningful goals that align with your values and lifestyle.

T – Trys

The ‘T’ in WANT stands for ‘Tries’ – these are the attempts and efforts you make towards your goals, even if they don’t always succeed.

Acknowledging your tries helps build resilience and shows you’re taking action, regardless of the outcome. Every try is a step forward in your journey, teaching valuable lessons and building momentum towards your goals.
